Mastic Gum is a natural resin from the Pistacia Lentiscus tree. This is a species native to arid, subtropical climates, which grows on the small Greek Island of Chios. The Pistacia lentiscus is an evergreen tree which grows 2-4 metres in height. It grows slowly and lives for 50-60 years and tends to be bush-like, which makes tapping the resin difficult, therefore trees in cultivation are pruned to encourage stem development. The mature plants generally consist of one or two thick contorted stems with an umbrella-shaped crown.
